The Boardriders Foundation Support of Sustainable Surf and SeaTrees Restoration Projects
OUR PARTNERSHIP
The Boardriders Foundation and SeaTrees are proud to embark on a multi-year partnership to restore coastal ecosystems and to inspire the global surfing community to work together to protect the ocean and reverse climate change. SeaTrees projects include planting mangrove trees, restoring kelp forests, regenerating coral reefs, and conserving coastal watersheds. Collectively known as blue carbon, these coastal ecosystems sequester carbon dioxide much faster than land-based ecosystems, are biodiversity hotspots and important for sustainable development.
Boardriders iconic surfing brands Billabong, Roxy, Quiksilver have been co-sponsoring these initiatives, involving some of their top athletes in the restoration and storytelling, and have collectively helped SeaTrees take significant strides towards their mission of turning the tide on climate change.

Kelp Forest Restoration
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
With support from Boardriders, SeaTrees began the restoration of 22,000 sq-ft of kelp (locally known as crayweed) along the South Bondi subtidal rocky reef in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia with project partners Operation Crayweed.
In October 2022, Boardriders team athletes Laura Enever and Tom Carroll joined the restoration efforts at Bondi Beach and participated in the hands-on crayweed planting, officially kicking off the
start of this new project.
Check out our newest film: The Lost Forest Down Under, as we join pro surfers Laura Enever and Tom Carroll as they explore the restoration efforts and organizations bringing back the once-vanished kelp forests on Australia's east coast.

Mangrove Forest Planting
BAJA, MEXICO
In April 2022, Boardriders supported the launch of a new SeaTrees mangrove planting project in Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California Sur, Mexico in partnership with WILDCOAST. This support allowed for 5,000 mangrove seedlings to be planted at the new project site - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s last undeveloped California gray whale breeding lagoon.
Roxy team athlete Maluhia Kinimaka accompanied SeaTrees and local women’s group “Mujeres de El Dátil” to participate in the hands-on planting of mangroves.
Thanks to the Boardriders Foundation, we were able to kick off this project with WILDCOAST - both of which have played a leading role in helping us get this project up and running.

Coral Reef Restoration
BALI, INDONESIA
In May 2022, Boardriders supported SeaTrees to kick off a new coral restoration site in Crystal Bay, Bali, Indonesia in conjunction with the Quiksilver/ROXY Pro G-Land surf contest.
Boardriders support allowed SeaTrees partners to restore 4,000 coral fragments using ancient Balinese seaweed cultivation techniques developed by local project partners Ocean Gardener, that have been adapted to restore many species of hard and soft coral, bringing back biodiversity to the reef.
Roxy athlete Caroline Marks and Balinese Quiksilver athlete Rajo Barrel accompanied SeaTrees and Boardriders to create a film showcasing this innovative coral restoration process and how surfers can play an active role in restoring the reefs which create the best waves on the planet.

Coastal Watershed Restoration
MAUI, HAWAII
In February 2022, Boardriders helped launch a new SeaTrees project that restored and regenerated 8,500 sq-ft of degraded coastal watershed on Maui, known in the Hawaiian language as an Ahupua'a.
Billabong team athletes Laura Enever and Alyssa Quizon participated in hands-on restoration with local project partners Regenerative Education Centers, where they were able to experience this critical ecosystem and the impact of the restoration efforts firsthand.
Following their visit, Boardriders and SeaTree produced a film for the Billabong Pipe Pro to showcase the project, how it protects the neighboring coral reefs that make some of the world's best waves, and how individuals can donate to restore this threatened ecosystem.

Kelp Forest Restoration
Palos Verdes, CA
Boardriders supported the restoration of 10,000 sq-ft of giant kelp forest along the California coast in Palos Verdes with project partners The Bay Foundation.
Kelp forests used to cover hundreds of miles of coast and provided critical habitats for over 700 marine species. But marine heat weaves, human activities, and the proliferation of purple sea urchins have caused about 95% of kelp forests to disappear since 2014.
With Boardriders support, SeaTrees and The Bay Foundation are able to make a significant impact in regenerating this devastated underwater ecosystem.

Kelp Forest Restoration
tankers reef, Monterey, CA
Boardriders supported the monitoring and reporting associated with a community-led kelp restoration project in partnership with Reef Check and Giant Giant Kelp Restoration (G2KR).
This project is unique because it utilizes volunteer divers to restore kelp by removing purple urchins. This is the first time this type of restoration work has been conducted by volunteers.
We’re currently in a monitoring phase, as required by the permit from the State of California, to verify that the community-led restoration worked and the kelp is growing back. If successful, this could be a model for engaging community volunteers to restore kelp forests around the world.

Kelp Forest Restoration
Cascais, portugal
Boardriders is supporting the creation of the mobile kelp forest nursery pioneered by SeaTrees project partners SeaForester, in Cascais, Portugal. This project includes the planting of 15,000 green gravel stones seeded with seaweed spores, which are grown on land in specialized nurseries, and then deployed out to sea. This project aims to lay the foundation for scaled-up seaforestation activities with a potential for large-scale marine reforestation.
The Boardriders x SeaTrees film for this project will be completed in the fall of 2023, and is set to premier in December 2023.
This project is currently in progress, with out-planting scheduled for November 2023. Stay tuned for updates coming in the next few months! Learn more about this project here.
